Dr. Sam Berne is a holistic optometrist. Having been diagnosed with an eye condition in early childhood, he set out on a healing journey to learn how to improve his vision. He made a full recovery, and today, he helps patients learn to naturally improve eyesight and heal the most common eye problems without surgery.

This article is derived from the podcast episode with Dr. Berne called How To Improve Eye Health Naturally – 4 Natural Eye Care Tips To Treat Common Eye Problems.

How Your Eyes Can Regenerate

“The science says that in fetal development in the first trimester, the eyes actually grow out from the brain, so every tissue of the eye is really brain tissue.” – Dr. Sam Berne

There are a number of different eye conditions, and many of them are relatively common, such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Eye doctors continue to tell patients that the conditions are irreversible and that the patients will eventually go blind.

But what does the science say?

The research seems to disagree with the optometrists. Eyes are generated from brain tissue, which means that you can regenerate your eyes through something called neurogenesis. In other words, you can reverse macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts, and even refractive errors by using natural methods.

One way to improve your eyesight is by increasing BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor). One study on the optic nerve showed some remarkable results. The researchers crushed the optic nerve on a test subject and then began administering BDNF. Within one week, the optic nerve had recovered 17% of its function, and in two weeks it had recovered 50%. This study indicates that BDNF may be an essential factor in eye health and repair.

So, how can you increase BDNF?

Incorporating habits such as daily aerobic exercise, hormesis, and spending hours in the sun is a great way to increase BDNF. Eating a diet rich in nutrients and making sure you get enough quality sleep is also essential for optimal eyesight.

Key Point: Your eyes are made up of brain tissue, which allows them to regenerate. If you wish to reverse an eye condition, you may want to stimulate your BDNF production. Hormesis, quality sleep, and proper nutrition are a few basic ways to boost your BDNF.
